A group of Moray teenagers will spend their summer holidays learning filmmaking skills in a bid to promote the region as a good place to earn a living.

The area’s Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) organisation is running a series of workshops, aimed at teaching youngsters how to record, edit and produce a short film.

The finished product will be used to highlight the diverse work options which Moray has to offer.

The 84 pupils granted places on the course will work with Northport Studios in Elgin to enhance their skills.

The children, from Keith Grammar School and Elgin, Buckie and Speyside High Schools, are taking part in introductory sessions this month before the cameras roll in August.

Groups from every school decided on which firms they wanted to focus and drew up pitches to secure their spots on their course.

DYW Moray manager, Moira Stickle, said the scheme should ultimately help the participating children secure jobs themselves.

She said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with pupils in secondary schools.

“We are offering them experience which will help them develop their creativity and self-management, and ultimately their employability skills.

“Every school selected their best three proposals before the film-makers decided on who would be taking part.

“The whole process has been fascinating.”

Northport Studio’s Anne Duncan added: “This was a tough challenge for the last few weeks of the school term.

“However, the energy and enthusiasm of the pupils is infectious, and it was extremely hard to make that final selection.

“We congratulate all the students involved, and look forward to working with the winners and their chosen businesses over the next five months.”

The films will be screened at future Moray career events.
