Limited parking around the Plainstones in Elgin has been one suggestion to curbing traffic problems.

Landmarks in Elgin’s town centre will have a different light shone on them from now on.

New energy-saving technology has been installed at sites in the town’s historic heart to create a “warm glow” on winter nights.

Pupils from both Elgin secondary schools as well as students at Moray College will flick the switch tonight on the new hues tonight.

The Wolf of Badenoch statue on the High Street will now have lights that change colour, which can also be programmed for special occasions.

Also included in the project is the town drummer statue and The Tower, a 17th century lodging that is now home to local firm Ritsons.

The work has been funded by the town’s Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere project as well as the Elgin conservation area regeneration scheme.

Alistair Simpson, partner manager of Ritsons, said: “The lighting will create a great addition to the town centre and will contribute to a more attractive environment and ambience – particularly for the Tower.

“It will bring out some of the features that otherwise may not have been noticed.”

The first switch on will be at the Wolf at 7.30pm before the Elgin and District Pipe Band leads guests to the town drummer.

Animated projections on the back of St Giles Church will return next month and will run until March next year.
