Campaigners working to bring a new artificial sports pitch to Moray have been given a £100,000 funding boost.

Work is expected to begin on building the all-weather surface at Elgin’s Lesser Borough Briggs within weeks following a three-year battle.

Construction is now able to go ahead after court approval to transfer the common good land to the Elgin Sports Community Trust on a 99-year lease.

Now the group has received a £100,000 grant from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to help support the project.

Karen Chamberlain, development manager at HIE, said: “This is fantastic project by the Elgin Sports Community Trust, that will provide wide ranging benefits to the community for many years.

“It will help attract and retain talent in the area, particularly young people, and encourage all ages to enjoy an active and social lifestyle.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide support and look forward to seeing the project take shape.”

Sports clubs, community groups and local schools have already expressed an interest in booking time on the pitch.

Trust chairman Dave Allen said: “Not only has HIE assisted us financially but the advice we have received from them throughout the design and planning stages has been priceless.

“It’s a great example of how strong a community we have here and will directly benefit those suffering from social isolation and from health and welfare issues as well as inspire talented sportspeople to remain in the area.”
