A worried Moray mum has launched a petition calling for speed calming measures near a popular playpark.

Buckie woman Lorna Taylor has urged Moray Council to introduce speed bumps next to the Well Road Park.

Mrs Taylor fears it is only a matter of time until a child is killed or seriously injured crossing the road to the well-used park.

She said vehicles routinely break the speed limit in the residential area and there has been “too many near misses”.

The mother added: “Drivers plant their foot right down while travelling down the road at a ridiculous speed in a build-up area and near a park.

“It shouldn’t take somebody getting knocked down before something can be done.

“We don’t have any signs near the park so maybe not everyone knows there is a park and there are kids that run across the road and don’t look for cars.

“At night, my husband and I sit in our home and hear the speed of the cars.

“It is shocking that the speeding is happening all the time and even at 10 o’clock at night.

“It has been going on for a long time and it is worse now we have a park with the larger volume of traffic. ”

A Moray Council spokeswoman said that traffic engineers will assess the site to see if it is “appropriate” to install new or additional signage.

However, Mrs Taylor believes that the signage will not solve the issue of the road being a “rat race”.

She recalls her husband Stewart witnessing a youngster almost run across the road as a driver came racing around the corner.

“My main worry is the slowing down of vehicles and there is nothing to help the situation at all,” she said.

“Last week my husband saw a little boy who was about to cross behind a van and then a car came flying down the road.

“Thankfully the boy stopped and my husband’s heart sank.

“I feel if we had speed bumps just before the end of the park and after it – this would slow people down.

“A lot of mums and dads are really concerned about the dangerous and fast driving from people.”
