A teenager has been learning how to fly with show-stopping acrobatic moves for a Moray production of a hit musical.

Elgin Academy pupil Mhairi Maclean has been hooked on Fame since going to see it in Aberdeen when she was just eight-years -old.

Now she will be thrust into the spotlight of the show as part of the energetic cast from the St Giles’ Theatre Group.

The 15-year-old, who lives in Roseisle, will perform the signature leap from the production’s famous logo that is known throughout the world.

She said: “I’ve always loved dancing and I love musical theatre. Fame is such a fun show. I loved it when I went to see it in Aberdeen.

“I’ve had to work quite a lot to build up my skill on the moves for the show. Lifts have been the hardest part, there aren’t that many male dancers to work with.”

Mhairi is one of two dance captains responsible for inspiring the rest of the cast with their energetic moves.

The show is the 29th annual production from the theatre group, which is part of St Giles’ and St Columba’s Church in Elgin.

An ensemble of more than 60 youngsters, aged between 10 and 19, will take to the stage this week to tell the story of performing arts students in their final year at a school in New York through song and dance.

Yesterday the crew working behind the scenes on the musical revealed this week’s run at Elgin Town Hall would be their most ambitious project to date.

Director Emma Sharpe said: “The lighting and staging of Fame is going to be our most technical show yet.

“We’re staying authentic to the original 1980s script but there are a couple of adaptations to make it a bit more modern.

“It’s a big show – it’s iconic and the cast have really enjoyed working on it.”

Fame is running at Elgin Town Hall from tomorrow until Saturday, April 22 at 7.30pm each evening. Tickets are available on the door and cost £12, under 16s £10.
