It may be a distant memory but one community group has delivered a Christmas miracle to a north-east hospital.

Peterhead Roundtable has handed over £9,000 to the town’s community hospital which will help fund the redevelopment of the renal dialysis unit.

Work is underway to redesign the inside of the building to accommodate an extra two beds for people getting kidney treatment.

The cash was raised through the organisation’s annual Santa collection, where the group tours around the town and surrounding area dressed in the iconic red and white garb collecting for charity.

James Taylor has spent a total of five-and-a-half years receiving treatment at the unit across two different spells,

He has since received a kidney transplant so does not currently need dialysis but said the donation would be a vital help for an invaluable service.

He said: “They (the unit) need money all the time to try and improve things and they do a fantastic job there with the resources they have, especially for the comfort of patients.

“People can be in there for four to five hours several days a week so even the smallest thing that you take for granted like a good quality TV can make all the difference.”

Gregor Mackintosh, assistant chairman of the round table, said the group was delighted to be able to help.

“We managed to raise about £10,200 this year and thought the unit was a great cause because it has such an impact on peoples’ lives.

“Having to spend so much time there must be terrible for people so it’s great they can make it a comfortable environment.”
