Drivers awoke to stunning wintry scenes and travel disruptions in areas throughout Scotland this morning after heavy snowfall blanketed the country.

It was the beginning of another day of travel chaos after areas throughout the north-east and central Scotland struggled to cope with icy conditions.

Police warned commuters to take care on the roads and to plan ahead to avoid unnecessary delays.

Forecasters issued a yellow weather warning for areas of the north-east and central Scotland, with persistent and heavy snow expected.

Nick Grahame, Chief Forecaster for the Met Office, said: “A depression which has crossed northern parts of Northern England early Friday is bringing a slow-moving band of rain, sleet and snow into the area.

“This has stalled across eastern Scotland for a time early on Friday and will go on to push away east or south-eastwards through the course of Friday.”

He added: “The highest snowfall accumulations look likely to be away from the northern and southern fringes of the warning area.

“There remain uncertainties about the lowest level to which snow will fall, which could be 100m either side of heights quoted in the warning.

“This warning will be kept under review and may be updated.”
