Byron fighter John Docherty takes Commonwealth Games bronze following semi-final defeat

Byron Boxing's John Docherty took bronze in the 75kg division.

Byron Boxing Club’s John Docherty finished his Commonwealth Games with a bronze medal following a unanimous defeat to Cameroon’s Wilfried Seyi Ntsengue.

Docherty lost out 5:0 on the judges’ scorecards, meaning he takes home the bronze medal he was already guaranteed after his quarter-final win over Ben Whittaker.

The two boxers went toe-to-toe in the first round, with Docherty catching Seyi Ntsengue with some good counter-punches before the ranging Cameroonian – a soldier in the national army – started to find gaps in the Scots’ guard.

After shading the first round, Seyi Ntsengue displayed his unconvential style, dropping his arms, staggering forward and gurning at Docherty in an attempt to distract the 2015 Commonwealth Youth champion. Docherty stood at close range to his opponents and landed several key body shots as both boxers breached the other’s defences more regularly.

It came down to the final round, with 20-year-old Docherty needing to utilise his combinations to get ahead on the scorecards. Docherty’s lack of head movement saw him caught a couple of times by Seyi Ntsengue’s jab, but the man in the blue vest was content to weather the blows to stay within range.

However, it proved to be one shot too many, as the five judges all awarded the contest to the Cameroon fighter and he advanced to the final.
