Aberdeen returned to second place in the Scottish Premiership with a 1-0 victory against Dundee at Dens Park.

Scott McKenna netted his first goal for the Dons three minutes into the second half to earn the Reds maximum points in their first match since manager Derek McInnes turned down the chance to move to Rangers.

The result moves the Dons three points clear of the Ibrox club, who take on Ross County tomorrow.

Ryan Christie returned for the Dons after missing last Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Rangers through suspension as McInnes made two changes.

Nineteen-year-old Frank Ross was rewarded for his stunning free kick consolation goal with his first top team start with Scott Wright dropping to the bench, while Stevie May missed out due to injury.

Dundee manager Neil McCann named an unchanged line-up following wins against Ross County and Rangers.

Aberdeen manager McInnes received a warm reception from the travelling support as he took his place in the away dugout.

His side started with a real sense of purpose with captain Graeme Shinnie fizzing a fierce effort from 25 yards just wide inside three minutes.

Andrew Considine went close from a Ross corner before Roarie Deacon was denied by Joe Lewis as the game flowed from end to end at an entertaining pace.

Christie almost made the breakthrough with a jinking run that culminated in a well-struck effort that flew over before Deacon was denied a spectacular opener by a superb save from Lewis.

The Dons made the breakthrough three minutes into the second half when McKenna prodded a Kenny McLean cross into the net.

The hosts almost levelled immediately with Lewis making another excellent save to prevent a Sofien Moussa header from finding the net.

Dundee threw on A-Jay Leitch-Smith for Deacon as time ticked down but the Dons were managing the game well and restricting the hosts to a limited amount of possession.

Dons captain Shinnie should have ended the game as a contest with eight minutes remaining when he raced onto a through-ball from Rooney but the former Caley Thistle’s effort was weak and easily gathered by Parish.

Shinnie turned provider to set up Shay Logan soon after as the Dons continued to find space on the counter-attack but the Dons right back fluffed his lines and fired into the side-netting.
