Weir looking for 15-point lead on Clyde

Elgin City manager Jim Weir wants a 15-point lead on Clyde with a victory against the Bully Wee in League 2 today.

City are on course for a play-off place and sit third while Clyde’s top-four hopes have slid in recent weeks following an eight-match league winless streak which has left them sixth.

Elgin have lost their last five matches against the Cumbernauld side, with their last victory a 1-0 home success last February.

Clyde were among the title favourites at the start of the campaign, but Weir is determined to inflict a severe blow to their play-off ambitions.

He said: “If we can get the right result it would extend the gap to 15 points, which would make it difficult for them to catch us.

“The last game against them was feisty when they beat us 2-1 at Broadwood in November. It’s been a difficult fixture for us in the last five games against them but we won’t be looking for any excuses.”

Weir watched on as Clyde fell to a 2-1 extra-time defeat against Championship side Ayr United in the Scottish Cup on Tuesday, but reckons Barry Ferguson’s men will be well prepared to deal with fatigue.

He added: “The game would have taken a physical toll on them, but Clyde deserved to win the game.”

Elgin will be without suspended defender David Brownlie, while the game comes too soon for midfielder Scott Smith who is nearing a return from a long-term ankle injury.
