‘Staggies fans should expect more from me’ says County midfielder

Ross County midfielder Christopher Routis.
Ross County midfielder Christopher Routis.

Ross County midfielder Christopher Routis is his own harshest critic and he feels Staggies supporters should expect more from him in the rest of the campaign.

Frenchman Routis joined the Highlanders from Bradford City last summer, ending two years with the English League One side after his move from Swiss side Servette.

After taking time to adapt to Scottish football, Routis has gone on to impress alongside fellow newcomer Tim Chow at the heart of County’s midfield.

Although pleased with his progress, Routis is hungry for more improvement and wants to add more goals and assists to his game.

Routis said: “It was new football for me, it’s a bit different from England. It was already different when I moved from Switzerland to Bradford, but I think here is a bit different as well.

“The team plays a bit more football and there are teams like Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen who are better.

“I’ll always just look at the bad about my performance, so I’m not good to judge, but I’m quite happy because I’ve played a lot of games and that was my target.

“There was one month when I stayed on the bench. To play every game is good but if the manager puts me on the bench then it is because my performance was not so good.

“I need to be focused on that, and correct that and play the second half of the season more consistently.

“I’m feeling better and I’m feeling confident.

“I talked to the manager towards the end of the year and he wants more from me. He thinks I can do more and I think that as well.

“I’ve just scored one goal from midfield and one or two assists, which is not really good. I think I can do better on that, I need to progress on that. I want to play the second part of the season better.”

County return to action in next week’s Scottish Cup fourth-round tie against Dundee United at Victoria Park.

After ending 2016 promisingly with just two defeats from nine games, Routis is eager to carry momentum into both cup and league campaigns.

He added: “It’s an important game because it is the last cup for us. We will be ready.

“We want to stay in the top six. That’s the target.

“In the first part of the season we had one month when we lost a lot of points. It was a bad time for the team but we still focused on the target. We have played better and better.

“From the last couple of games we did well and I think we are progressing.”
