Manager Jim McInally wants his Peterhead players to become legends as the Blue Toon’s date with destiny finally arrives.
The Buchan club’s players head for Hampden tomorrow to face Rangers in an historic Petrofac Training Cup final.
With Rangers promotion to the Premiership confirmed in midweek, in all likelihood it will be a first, and probably last, meeting of the sides in a domestic final and McInally wants his players to make the most of their opportunity to win silverware.
He said: “The build-up to the game has been fantastic for the town and the club but now it is all about the players.
“We know we are massive underdogs in this game but Rangers have had a big week in winning the league and they may not be fully focused on this game.
“If that is the case we have to be ready for them and make the final as tough for them as we can.
“Rangers are favourites but we are not going to Hampden for a day out. We won’t roll over and let them run all over us. Our intention is to win the cup and if we fall short we will at least make them work hard for it.”
The Light Blues will be playing Premiership football next season after winning the Championship on Tuesday but McInally is confident his players can cause Mark Warburton’s side problems tomorrow.
A physical approach is expected, which McInally makes no apologies for, but he is confident his players will play within the rules as they try to create a cup shock.
He said: “We have to be brave and put our foot in where it hurts at times but we are not going to Hampden to kick lumps out of them.
“We will have to press the ball and if we do make tackles we have to win the ball. If we give them time to play they will hurt us and we can’t let that happen.
“We know what we want to do and if we can execute the plan we have for the game we will give ourselves a chance and that’s all you need in a cup final.
“I’ve played against Rangers teams before who have lost because of complacency and if there is any in their side tomorrow we have to cash in.”
