Aberdeen Women picked up their first away SWPL 1 win of the season as they beat Dundee United 2-1 at Tannadice.

There were suggestions after the match that it could be the final game in the Dons dugout for co-managers Emma Hunter and Gavin Beith.

The Dons sit second bottom of SWPL 1 with seven points from 11 games following the win.

Hunter has been at the helm since 2019 when Aberdeen Women became officially associated with Aberdeen FC, while Beith joined the club last summer.

At Tannadice, Bayley Hutchison scored her second goal of the season to put the Dons 1-0 up within 15 minutes, before Danni McGinley pulled United level before half-time.

The intensity of the second half dropped, but the Dons battled and a 90th minute winner from Hutchison ensured their second win of the season.

Beith was delighted with the way in which the Dons fought to the very end of the match to pick up a “massive” three points in SWPL 1.

He said: “That win is huge and the girls deserve it. I know we’ve been on a tough run and haven’t got the results, but they do really good stuff.

“I thought in the first half they were fantastic and took complete control of the game. United are a strong side and came back into it but we dealt with the pressure well.

“The girls were resilient and battled for those three points. To have that resilience, it means you always have a chance to go and win it.”

The Dons make positive start at Tannadice

It was the home side who had the first shot on goal as McGinley tried her luck with a scooped shot from outside the box, but it well held by keeper Annalisa McCann.

From that chance, the Dons goalkeeper sent a long ball forward which found Hutchison who dragged her shot wide of Fiona McNicoll’s far post.

Aberdeen almost took the lead within five minutes but Chloe Gover’s free kick from 30 yards came back off the post.

A crucial block from Dundee United’s Lisa Ryan halted Hutchison, who would have been clear on goal after Gover’s perfectly-weighted pass.

Hutchison got her goal as Aberdeen took the lead in the 15th minute after Bailley Collins cleared a United free kick and sent the ball deep into the final third.

It allowed Hutchison to do what she does best as she beat Claire Delworth with her first touch which set her up for a close-range finish beyond McNicoll.

United had barely troubled the Dons but there was a nervy moment when Robyn Smith ended up with plenty of space in the box, but she slipped and scuffed her shot.

It was Smith again who had a glorious chance to pull the home side level just before half-time – but this time she skied her effort from inside the 18-yard box.

United got the equaliser in injury time with a great strike from McGinley, who had her back to goal before she swivelled to beat her marker and curl the ball into the net.

All to play for in the second-half

There were little chances from either side in the opening 20 minutes of the second half, with the most notable being a shot that went wide from United’s Tammy Harkin.

Loren Campbell tried to create something as she spotted Francesca Ogilvie making her way into the box, but the Dons captain’s long ball forward was collected by McNicoll.

Ogilvie went close with a curling shot from the edge of the box that the United keeper clawed round the post.

It looked certain that McGinley was going to put United 2-1 up but McCann, who is only 17, pulled off a magnificent save to deny the forward from point-blank range.

And in the dying minutes Aberdeen took the lead as Hutchison scored her second of the day after being played through by Eilidh Shore.

The forward – like her first goal – had a superb first touch to beat the Dundee United defence before unleashing a powerful strike beyond McNicoll to make it 2-1.
