Former Open champion Paul Lawrie has been selected as one of three vice-captains for this year’s Ryder Cup.

European captain Darren Clarke has named Thomas Bjorn, Padraig Harrington and Lawrie for his backroom staff at Hazeltine.

Bjorn performed the same role alongside Clarke in 2010 and 2012, while Harrington was one of five vice-captains to Paul McGinley at Gleneagles in 2014.

Former Open champion Lawrie, who played in the defeat at Brookline in 1999 and the ’Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012, will make his debut in the backroom staff as Europe seek an unprecedented fourth straight victory and ninth in the last 11 biennial contests.

The Aberdonian said: “I’m very much looking forward to it. It’s a first time for me on the backroom team.

“I’ve known Darren for a long time as we came on Tour together at the same time and I’m really looking forward to it and very excited. It’s a great honour to be on the backroom team.”
