North curlers turn on the style as Inverness skins competition proves to be a winner

First class curling on was show at the city’s Ice Centre as the Johnny Foxes Inverness Skins returned to the ice for the first time in three years at the weekend.

The overall skins competition was won by the Ardclach team of Ally Fraser, Ruairidh Greenwood, Calum Greenwood and Grant Fraser.

The top two in each section of four qualified for quarter-finals on the ‘high road’, while third-place finishers advanced to a semi-final on the ‘low road’.

Joan Macarthur, with the Spirit of Curling award winner Simon Gibb (centre), with world class Inverness curler Ewan MacDonald, who gave a speech before Joan presented the award in her husband George’s memory.

Ardclach triumphed in the final when they defeated the Inverness team of Graham Mackenna, Mike Mcinnes, Peter MacPhee and Gordon Millar in the final.

The winners took a prize pot for the weekend of £585 and the runners-up £382. The low road winner was the team skipped by Colin Dick and the runner-up was Blair Fraser.

In his emotional acceptance speech, Ally Fraser dedicated the victory to George Macarthur, who died this year and was the team’s mentor.

The Spirit of Curling award in George’s memory was won by Simon Gibb – as voted by the players.

Don Lawson, owner of Johnny Foxes, presented the trophy to the high road winners and Joan Macarthur presented the low road prizes.
