Each week, we ask small businesses key questions. Here we speak to Karen Stewart, who runs Aberdeen marketing and business development firm This Little Piggy
How and why did you start in business?
I’ve always loved business and found successful businesspeople inspiring. I worked as an adviser for 16 years at Elevator Business Gateway which I loved, and then it was time to put my money where my mouth was and start This Little Piggy.
How did you get to where you are today?
I started up just before the downturn which was interesting to say the least.
Initially, it was great and then things got pretty scary for a while. A lot of perseverance was required, and I’m really thankful that things picked up a lot last year and continue to now.
Who helped you?
So many people – friends, family, clients, business connections. I could fill a few pages of names.
I’m so lucky to know so many awesome people. Organisations such as the Federation of Small Businesses have also been great sources of support, wisdom and business guidance.
In February last year, I launched Grampian Business Finder on Facebook and the members there are fantastic – so proactive and enthusiastic. It’s great testament to the community spirit of our area.
What has been your biggest mistake?
I’m still making it – working in the business rather than on the business. I do what I can to keep the balance right, but I’m sure there’s more I can do on that front and I’m always looking to improve.
What is your greatest achievement?
Little Piggy is recognised a lot now which is great. I’m honoured to have been chosen for a recognition of excellence accolade in the Prestigious Awards International 2016 and I’ve just heard we’ve reached the finals of Scotland’s Business Awards Aberdeen.
Personally, I did a skydive for Alzheimer Scotland not long ago – pigs did fly. It’s the scariest thing I thought I’d never do.
If you were in power in government, what would you change?
I’d give prisoners work doing things the council don’t have resources for, like fixing roads and fly tips, and allocate the extra resources to those less fortunate – humans and animals – and to encouraging economic growth.
I’d also give much greater priority to animal rights and the planet. I love animals and we need a planet.
What do you still hope to achieve?
Loads – Little Piggy needs to be a great big pig contributing to the economy by creating work for others and making a difference by giving back to those in need.
What do you do to relax?
I walk my chum, Sweep the dog, and read fiction to escape and personal development books to learn.
I love loud music in the car and I always make sure I get tickets to my favourite bands and entertainers.
What are you currently reading, listening to or glued to on the TV?
I’m reading Stephen King’s Revival and listening to Sixx:AM’s Prayers for the Blessed – I love everything they do.
What do you waste your money on?
Some people have said my £700 ticket to see Motley Crue was a waste but to me it was worth every penny. If it’s worth it to you, it’s never a waste of money.
How would your friends describe you?
They’ve said I’m brave and strong, and the sarcastic ones think I’m funny.
What would your enemies say about you?
What haters say is none of my business.
What do you drive and dream of driving?
I drive a wee Ford Ka that I bought when I sold makeup – it was branded up and had eyelashes then.
I’m actually now considering my next car, and so far I know it will be white and bigger to display Piggy’s branding. That’s the extent of my motoring knowledge right there.
