Painting a period hallway in a particularly bright shade of yellow requires some serious faith in one’s vision, not to mention dedication and patience.
The gamble paid off for Lydia and Richard Stewart however, who have modernised their stunning period home in Cults.
From bright colours to versatile family space, 362 North Deeside Road is a beautiful combination of high ceilings and futuristic design.
Dating back to 1890, the three bedroom property has been completely revamped by Lydia and Richard, who moved in nearly three-years ago.
They were eager to get their teeth into a period property, having struggled with small rooms and low ceilings in their previous 1930’s home.
Life had other plans however, and two-year-old Laurie now tears around the place.
Lydia, who is a solicitor, is now expecting her second child, and the couple are eager to start a fresh chapter before the next addition arrives.
There are memories in every corner though, and Lydia is incredibly proud that they stayed true to their vision.
“We got married in June 2014 and moved here in September, I was pregnant by the end of the year,” she said.
“We were ecstatic, and we continued to work on this vision for our family home.”
At the heart of the home is the stunning dining kitchen which has been completely transformed.
The dining area has a traditional fireplace and alcove with fitted shelving, and it’s the perfect place to come together with the family.
The modern kitchen offers plenty of storage, and Lydia’s attention to detail clearly shows.
“I didn’t want to bend down to use the oven and I wanted something which would be functional but also look lovely,” she said.
“I’m really pleased with the result, me and Richard can chat to each other as we make dinner whilst Laurie plays.
“It’s a fantastic space.”
There is also an elegant lounge for entertaining, and many of the original features have been maintained.
High ceilings, intricate cornicing, and a feature fireplace with open chimney make for a unique room to unwind in.
Amtico flooring completes the look, and the bay window is the perfect spot for the Christmas tree.
Completing the downstairs accommodation is a handy utility room alongside a shower room.
A traditional staircase with ornate cast iron balustrade and hardwood bannister leads to the upper floors.

“I’m not sure if Richard was convinced when I suggested bright yellow but it really works, it opens up the hallway and sets off the traditional features nicely,” said Lydia.
The master bedroom also boasts intricate cornicing and the remaining two bedrooms are both of excellent size.
The family bathroom has a modern suite complete with separate shower cubicle.
The staircase continues to the second floor where there is a good sized attic room with velux window and access to the eaves.
Outside there is a fully enclosed rear garden which has been lovingly maintained, and offers a lovely paved patio area for al fresco dining.
To the front of the property is a spacious driveway, and mature trees provide screening from the road.
“We feel very tucked away here, yet I only have to pop over the road to the shop,” said Lydia.
“There is a fantastic community here and we’ve been blessed with brilliant neighbours.
“When I had Laurie there were plenty of groups to join and I loved strolling up the old railway line with her buggy during my maternity leave.
“We are very sad to go because this has been our first family home and we’ve loved putting our own stamp on it.”
