Lisbon is an ideal choice for the discerning holidaymaker with so many great flight and hotel deals around, and there’s never been a better time to go than now.

Lisbon is a vibrant and charismatic city made up of a rich and colourful tapestry of its history, architecture, culture and lively social life. It also benefits from a decent year-round climate.

Spring is a lovely time to visit – it’s sunny and bright but you’ll be able to enjoy wandering around in more pleasant temperatures. Like most European cities, it does get pretty hot in the summer months.

If a few days in this beautiful city are on the cards for you this spring, here’s just a few of the best things to see and do on a short break

Lisbon Cathedral

The impressive Santa Maria Maior is the oldest church in the city and dates back to the 12th century. It has survived many natural disasters and has been renovated and restored over the years. Worth a visit to enjoy the cool, peaceful interior.

Jeronimos Monastery

Sticking with religious and historical sites for now, the Jeronimos Monastery is a beautiful place to visit and enjoy the impressive architecture and stonework of this UNESCO world heritage site.

Sao George Castle

The imposing Saint George’s Castle can be seen from almost anywhere in the city and this castle served as a Moorish royal residence until 1147. It was named after England’s patron saint in commemoration of the Anglo-Portuguese pact. Today, visitors can climb the towers and explore the grounds.

Torre de Belem

Another UNESCO world heritage site, this Gothic tower stands guard over the harbour and a visit will give you an insight into Portugal’s maritime history.

The Chiado

If you fancy some serious retail therapy, then head for the upmarket neighbourhood of Chiado.

Here you will find a host of designer brands and luxury retailers.

There’s also a chic multi-level shopping mall, Armazens do Chiado, where you’ll find everything you could want and need from fashion to perfumes and luxury cosmetics  to homewares and gifts as well as a food court to refuel after a busy day’s shopping.

Bairro Alto

Lisbonne, maisons du quartier du bairro alto

Just along the road from Chiado is Bairro Alto and the sun sets on a lovely day touring the city, this is the place to be.  As night falls, this quarter bursts into life. Here you will be spoilt for choice as each bar and club looks more welcoming than the next, so prepare yourself for a late night into the wee small hours of morning.
