An Aberdeen charity shop, which has raised more than £2million in the battle against cancer, will close its doors after 25 years this weekend.

The Cancer Research UK branch on Chapel Street, which has raised £2,245,000 for the organisation since 1991, will shut for the final time on Saturday October 29.

The closure comes after the opening of the charity’s new, larger store at 125 Union Street, which started trading last year.

Charity chiefs have urged loyal customers to use the new branch, as well as the charity’s discount store at 19 Rosemount Viaduct, to continue their support.

Area trading manager Susan Auld said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to the community for the support we’ve received.

“I would also like to thank the amazing staff and volunteers who have given up their time to work in the Chapel Street shop and have done a fantastic job.

“We haven’t moved far. All of our Aberdeen customers are very welcome at the Union Street store which is in a great location and sells high quality items, with all profits going to Cancer Research UK.

“And there are some great bargains available at our store in the Rosemount Viaduct.”

Cancer Research UK spent more than £33 million last year in Scotland on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research.

And some of that research is being carried out in Aberdeen by scientists working with the charity to find new treatments for the disease.

The north-east medical experts have used cash generated by Cancer Research UK shops to fund their investigations into lung cancer, preventing damage from radiotherapy and other pioneering schemes.

Ms Auld added: “We receive no government funding for our life-saving research, so rely on the people who support us by shopping with us, making a donation or by generously offering their time.”

The charity is currently recruiting volunteers to help at the Union Street and Rosemount Viaduct stores, and is still accepting donations of quality clothes, shoes, bags and other items seven days a week.
