An ‘utterly outrageous’ lout who punched a woman in the face before spitting at a policeman at a city nightclub has been fined £900.

Duncan Angus, of Linksfield Court, took a swing at the woman when on a night out in Nox in Justice Mill Lane on August 21 last year.

When officers tried to restrain the 28-year-old, he launched saliva at PC Lewis Thomson, which landed at his feet.

Fiscal depute Marie Irvine told Aberdeen Sheriff Court: “At around 1.48am, Miss Forbes was with her son, who was working behind the bar. Without provocation he (Angus) punched her once to the side of the face.

“He was led out of the front door onto Justice Mill Lane. He was asked to move by an officer but he turned around and spat at Mr Thomson. The spittle landed at his feet.”

Angus, of Linksfield Court, Aberdeen, pleaded guilty to assault and spitting at an officer.

Defence agent Laura Gracie said: “He doesn’t know why he conducted himself in this manner. He was put on the redundancy shortlist and was struggling to cope with that. He let his hair down more than was suitable for him.

“He does appear to be genuinely embarrassed and upset. Thankfully his job is safe and he is in full time employment. He pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.”

Sheriff Malcolm Garden told Angus: “This kind of behaviour is utterly outrageous. The fact you had been drinking is no excuse at all. If you can’t control yourself while drinking, you shouldn’t be drinking. Simple as that.”

The sheriff fined him £500 for the assault and £400 for spitting at the officer.
