Peterhead caravan park in limbo after collapse of local charity

A popular north-east caravan park has been left in limbo after the charity which managed the tourism site collapsed.

Peterhead Projects, the organisation leading the regeneration of the north-east town, closed amid financial difficulties earlier this year.

The liquidation of the organisation left 10 local people redundant and the future of several projects including a local caravan park hanging in the balance.

Veronica Johnston, the site manager of Peterhead’s Lido Caravan Park, has been running the operation for the past four years with her husband.

Mrs Johnston has told liquidators Begbies Traynor that she is interested in taking over the site altogether, describing the management post as her “dream job”.

But no announcement has yet been made on the future of the caravan park.

She said: “At the time of the liquidation announcement, my husband and I were told that the park was the only viable part of the business so would be running as usual.

“No one has told me what is happening or if I will still have a job in the future.”

Mrs Johnston added she and her husband had spent four years “building the park up” and expressed frustration at the fact a question mark hung over the future of the business.

She said: “We take pride in what we do and we will be so annoyed if we don’t get it. I’ve put my heart and soul into this and I’ve got great plans for the future.

“So much could be done here, but I don’t know what’s happening. I feel like I’m stuck in limbo.”

She confirmed the park attracts a lot of European visitors and tourists from as far afield as Australia to the Blue Toon. The accommodation has been busy during the annual Scottish Week Gala.

Last night a spokeswoman for Begbies Traynor said an update on the future of the park may be announced next week.

Local charity and “upcycling” store 2ReUse – which was overseen by Peterhead Projects – has now been resurrected as 2gd2bnu on Berryden Road.
