Marines triumph in gruelling cycle challenge for cancer charity

A group of Royal Marines have raised thousands for charity by taking on the national three peaks challenge, climbing Snowden, Scafell and Ben Nevis.

A team of Royal Marines who pedalled 620 miles across the nation’s tallest peaks have raised nearly £19,000 for charity.

Daniel Stewart, 27, had his world turned upside down when he was told he has testicular cancer two years ago.

The Portlethen marine decided to take on a gruelling challenge to show Friends of Anchor his gratitude for its support throughout his treatment.

Mr Stewart and 14 other colleagues spent a week this summer cycling across Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Ben Nevis.

Now they have handed over a total of £18,654.71 to Friends of Anchor and The Royal Marine Charity – smashing their original target of £10,000.

From the money raised, £9,233.40 will be given for the north-east cancer support charity and the remainder towards the organisation that helps Royal Marines’ families.

Mr Stewart said: “It was much harder than I expected, that’s for sure.

“As an unexperienced cyclist it was tough – we were burning 10,000 calories a day and that’s not something we were used to.

“The money we have raised has made it all worth it.

“Our target was £10,000 to start with, which was already a big sum, so this has been amazing.

“To be in a position to give back to both of these charities has been great.”
