An Aberdeen MSP wants the public to be kept better informed during city road works following the “protracted” closure of a vital commuter route.
Mugiemoss Road had been closed between property numbers 73-230 since March 16, but reopened yesterday.
The route – which runs from the A90 north of the Haudagain roundabout to Bucksburn – was closed to allow work to proceed on a Barratt Homes housing development.
The firm is building 288 properties along the road.
Aberdeen Donside SNP MSP Mark McDonald said yesterday: “Obviously the road reopening will be welcomed by residents and commuters alike, but it does nevertheless come at the end of a protracted closure which has seen residents and the wider public very much having to get their information through the media.”
Mugiemoss Road had originally been due to reopen on July 9, but remained closed longer because of the need to replace water mains.
Mr McDonald said these were “extenuating circumstances”, but added that the council and contractor “should have started to communicate with residents and the wider public that they were going to close the road longer”.
Since March, contractors have been upgrading the road and laying a new sewer, along with water and gas pipes and electricity, street lighting and communications cables.
They have also constructed a new footway alongside the road.
Aberdeen City Council leader, Jenny Laing, said: “By working in partnership with Barratt Homes these private works have been completed in five months.
“This is due to the co-ordinated effort by all involved to minimise the disruption to road users.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience and understanding while these essential works were carried out.”
Mr McDonald added: “Obviously there will be significant developments taking place off both sides of the road and I would hope this work has allowed all the property work to take place, and you would hope there would be no further disruptions.”
