Police hunt for fraudster operating in Aberdeen city centre

Police are hunting for a fraudster who tried to trick an Aberdeen resident into giving over their bank details and money yesterday.

The culprit is described as being around 30, with a slim build and an Asian appearance.

He was wearing a dark clothing and baseball cap at the time of the incident.

Last night officers urged members of the public to be vigilant over bogus callers.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Skene said: “I cannot stress enough how important it is for members of the public to be on their guard from callers either at your home – or on the phone – asking for your banking details or any money in your property to be handed over.

“The most simple but effective advice I can offer is that you should never, ever provide your banking information, bank card or PIN number to anyone whether on the phone or in person.

“No official body will ever ask you for your PIN number, especially on your doorstep, on the phone, by e-mail or letter.”

He urged anyone with any doubts or suspicions about callers, or who might know yesterday’s conman to call 101 as a “matter of urgency”.

He added: “I would also ask all members of the public to keep an eye on any older or vulnerable family members, friends or neighbours and to ensure they are also on their guard.”
