Concern grows for Highland man missing in freezing temperatures

Calum MacKenzie has been missing since Thursday last week.
Calum MacKenzie has been missing since Thursday last week.

Fears are growing for a Highland man who has been missing since Thursday amid overnight sub-zero temperatures.

Searches continued for Calum Mackenzie, from Alness, throughout yesterday.

Invergordon lifeboat crews, mountain rescue teams with 20 personnel and 10 Coastguard volunteers all joined in the effort to track the 41-year-old.

The alarm was raised when Mr Mackenzie, who has never been reported missing previously, failed turn up for tea with his parents.

Police issued an urgent appeal in a bid to trace Mr Mackenzie, including asking drivers to check dash-cam footage between 1pm and 3pm on Thursday in areas near his home in Salvesen Crescent.

They are particularly keen on the areas from his street, the Kendal Crescent and Obsdale Road areas in Alness, and the B817 shore road between the High Street and Invergordon.

Members of the public are also being asked to check CCTV around their property, and to have a look in any outbuildings, sheds or garages.

The missing man is described as white, 6ft in height, of stocky build, and bald. He was wearing a black jacket with a blue logo, a light blue shirt, black jeans and black boots when last seen.

Sergeant Nicola MacDonald, of Alness Police Station, said: “Calum has never been missing before.

“He did not turn up for tea with his parents on Thursday afternoon and they then raised the alarm. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen Calum, or maybe knows where he is, to get in touch.

“His family are very concerned for him. We would also ask Calum to call us or his family to let everyone know he is OK.”

Inspector Martyn Brill added: “I thank the public for their continued assistance to trace Calum and ask if you have any details that could help to find him, no matter how insignificant they may seem, to please contact us.

“I also appeal to Calum directly to please get in touch with us or his family.”

Invergordon councillor Maxine Smith said: “Let’s hope Calum is found well. His family must be in turmoil. It is every family’s worst nightmare and I’m thinking of them.”

The search was called off as darkness fell last night.
