Two people have died following a crash on the A9 in the Highlands.

Emergency services were called to a stretch of the Inverness to Thurso road at around 11.45am on Tuesday.

A white Land Rover Defender had been involved in a crash at Achavanich, north of Latheron.

Both the 46-year-old male driver and 50-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and the road remained closed for nearly 10 hours while collision investigation works were carried out.

Appeal for A9 crash witnesses

Police are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash and are urging anyone who saw the car involved prior to the incident to come forward.

Sergeant Calum MacAulay from the police’s road policing unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of both people who have died in this incident.

“We are working to establish the full circumstances which led to the collision and I would urge anyone who may have information to come forward.

“We would be keen to anyone who may have seen the Land Rover on the road prior to the incident or who may have dashcam footage from the area.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1064 of 29 of November 29.
