Fix for historic flooding problem on Highland road

Flooding issues on the A835 Inverness to Ullapool road are to be addressed as a new culvert is built.

The culvert is going under the road near Leckmelm Farm following an investment of £1million from Transport Scotland.

Work to replace the existing culvert, which is located three miles south east of Ullapool, will begin on Monday (Nov 6) for up to six months.

The new culvert will be larger and will provide a significantly increased capacity for water flows, designed to last for over 120 years.

To allow the installation to take place, a temporary bridge will be constructed with a temporary diversion road created.  Temporary traffic lights and a reduced speed limit of 30mph will be in place for the safety of road workers and motorists.

The installation is being carried out during the autumn and winter months to avoid impacting the peak tourist season.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s north west representative, said: “This £1million project will address historic flooding issues near Leckmelm Farm, helping to improve road safety during periods of heavy rain. The investment is vital to ensure the A835 remains a safe, reliable route to Ullapool and the Outer Hebrides.

“Our teams have designed the project to include a temporary bridge to be constructed next to the site, ensuring that the A835 remains open throughout this major project, helping to ensure disruption is minimised.

“We encourage all road users to follow any signs or traffic management that is in place for their own safety as well as that of our teams, and remind them to plan ahead and leave some extra time before they travel.”
