Bonny Oban Bay was even busier than usual on Saturday as two major events drew large crowds to the town centre.

Spectators cheered on competitors in both the Oban Sea Kayak Race – the largest of its kind in the UK – and the six teams taking part in this year’s Great Oban Raft Race.

The sea kayak race, which covers a distance of 12.4 miles, is a popular event and takes sailors through remote and exposed waters around Kerrera.

Autoglass – Highest Sponsorship

A total of 52 kayakers took part, with Dougal Glaisher, from the south of England winning the men’s competition, and Lizelle Kemp, from Dunbar, the first placed woman.

All money raised at the event is donated to the local lifeboat crew.

Meanwhile, six teams took part in the raft race organised by the Oban and Lorn Lions Club.

Reigning champions Oban Distillery won for the fourth year in the row, although Autoglass won the prize for highest sponsorship raised and Martyn’s Monday Club had the best dressed raft.

Nicola Wilson, vice-president of the lions club, said: “Prizes were handed out by our president, Jim Edge, who puts a huge amount of work into the event.

Oban Distillery – Overall Winner

“All money raised goes back into helping good causes in the area.

“Everyone had a magic time. We had great support from the locals and there were also a lot of people about for the sea kayak race.

“We would like to thank Oban Lifeboat, the coastguard and all of the volunteers. There are a lot of people behind the scenes and it just wouldn’t be possible to do it without them.”

The town was also busy with the town market in Station Square, adding to the atmosphere on the day.
