Police have identified a body recovered from the River Nairn following a public appeal.
A woman was seen in the water opposite the caravan park on Shambles Road, around 8.55am on Sunday. Her body was recovered near the harbour a short time later.
Detective Inspector Peter MacKenzie of Inverness CID said officers were conducting a number of inquiries to identify the woman, establish the circumstances leading up to her death and trace her family.
“As part of this we are appealing to the public for help and would urge anyone that recognises the description to get in touch with us as soon as possible,” he said at the weekend.
The force confirmed today the woman has now been identified as a 64 year-old from Nairn and her relatives have been informed of the death.
A post-mortem will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death. The death is being treated as unexplained and there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.
“Members of the public are thanked for their response to our appeal,” a police statement said.
