Searches continued yesterday on Skye for a man who has been missing since the weekend.

Gordon Buchan was last seen in the Kyle area at around 3pm on Sunday.

The 55-year-old’s light blue Citroen was found abandoned outside the Taste of India Restaurant, located at the north end of the village, with the keys still in the ignition, sparking a massive search.

Around 60 people have been involved, with searches carried out at Loch Duich by Kyle Lifeboat, coastguard teams and police yesterday afternoon.

Door-to-door inquiries have also been carried out, while other teams searched the surrounding area and coastline from Kylerhea right up to Plockton.

Murdo Macaulay, HM Coastguard area commander has been coordinating the search alongside senior coastal operations officer Ronald MacLean.

He said despite their best efforts, no trace of Mr Buchan has yet been found.

He said: “That’s the frustrating part that we haven’t got any further with this.

“We have searched a fairly extensive area in land on the Kyleakin side and indeed we have been in the town of Kyle itself doing back gardens and door-to-door stuff. We have also looked in land too and still found no sign of him.”

Rescue teams from Skye were joined by Kintail Mountain Rescue and coastguard teams from Portree, Duvegan, Kyle of Lochalsh, Applecross, Lochewe, and Gairloch as well as lifeboat crews from Kyle and Mallaig.

Members of the Stornoway Coastguard were also flown over by coastguard rescue helicopter 948 to assist officers and Police Scotland dogs, Sarda (search and rescue dog association) and local firefighters.

Residents are now being urged to check their back gardens and out buildings Mr Buchan.

He is described as 5ft 10ins, of medium build, with short, dark greying hair. When last seen, he was wearing blue jeans, a grey T-shirt and green waterproof jacket.

Mr Macaulay said they had taken the search as far as they could until more information comes to light. He said talks will continue with police regarding the next steps.

He added: “He went missing during a period of bad weather, his car has been found, he’s not got much with him that would support any sort of normality – so we are concerned for the individual’s welfare.

“It’s fair to say as time wears on we are always more concerned.”
