Military wives to mark WW1 centenary with new album

The Kinloss Military Wives Choir will be recording vocals on the new album.
The Kinloss Military Wives Choir will be recording vocals on the new album.

Military wives from across the north are to pay tribute to their predecessors from World War I when they record an album to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the conflict.

The Kinloss Military Wives Choir will head to Edinburgh to sing on the We Will Remember Them album in January.

The new CD will feature vocals from ladies from 74 military wives choirs from the UK, Cyprus and Belgium, with all the Scottish choirs joining forces to record together.

The title track, We Will Remember Them, will feature more than 1,500 voices and was created by gathering the thought and feelings of the wives.

Jenn French, of the Kinloss choir, said: “We heard it together last week at a national conference in Birmingham. It was very emotional and lovely to hear it back.”

She added: “We are telling the story of the military wives. We know what it is all about to be the families left behind.

“There will be a mixture of music. There will be ballads about who we are and our experiences. We will be accompanied by the military brass bands for some of the songs.

“There will also be modern pop songs and music specially commissioned for us to record.

“We feel like there was incredible heroism shown by the soldiers, and by the wives back home on a smaller scale. They worked hard to raise their families while missing their husbands. Many of them lost their husbands and there are women in our choir who know that feeling, or know how it feels to miss them when they are away.

“It’s obviously not on the same scale as World War I, but we have the same feelings as those women.

“It’s important that we remember what they did for us, and doing it through music is a powerful and positive way to do that.

“Being in the choir gives us a focus. We share the same frustrations about the military and we know how to help each other when one of us is having a down day.”

The new album will be released in 2018.
