Renovation work at a Moray hospital will begin within weeks after being delayed due to coronavirus.
Staff at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin set the target of raising cash to refurbish the unit’s historic dome as part of its 200th birthday celebrations.
Fundraisers were run by the Friends of Dr Gray’s group, which is spearheaded by NHS staff, to reach the ambitious total with local firms Johnstons of Elgin and Walkers selling special products to contribute to the target.
The group has already raised more than £42,000 of the £60,000 with an anonymous donation of £12,000 being received in March to allow the work to go ahead.
Work on the dome, which can be seen from across the town, will restore the four clock faces to bring them all back into working order. Only one currently shows the correct time.
The Friends of Dr Gray’s spokesman said: “After an unavoidable delay of several months due to the pandemic, a provisional timetable has been agreed between Friends of Dr Gray’s, NHS Grampian and specialist repairers Smiths of Derby.
“Scaffolding is planned to go up around the dome in the week of August 31 in parallel with cleaning inside, with work starting the following week and expected to take about three weeks, all provided there is no change in local coronavirus status.”
