Spirit of World War II to be brought back to life by heritage railway in Moray

Brief Encounter will merge with The Lady Vanishes on a Moray heritage train next month as part of a 1940s weekend.

The Keith and Dufftown Railway is recreating World War II at stations and on carriages to transport passengers back in time.

Any traces of the 21st century will be removed or hidden by sacks to make the tableau as realistic as possible.

Organiser Nigel Bodiam is getting dressed up as a Desert Rat soldier with most of the car park at the Dufftown station to be covered in sand.

He said: “My passion is doing living history. We have actors who are doing some talks to really bring it to life.

“During the journey, we have re-enactors in two carriages, and in the other two, the characters are in amongst the passengers and the children have to guess [which one is] the spy.”

Military displays will be staged at Dufftown station, with the range of props including a vintage army tractor, vehicles and a sentry box.

Keith station will have windows covered to show what life was like on the Home Front and passengers will be issued with ID cards to display to military personnel.

Mr Bodiam added: “This year, we’ve made a real effort to have more going on in the carriages. It also looks like we’ll have about three times as many military vehicles.

“I am getting quite concerned thinking about where we’re going to put them all.”

Keith and Dufftown Railway’s 1940s weekend is on Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19.
