Plans for a major new sports facility in a north-east town have been unveiled.
The south links area of Fraserburgh could be transformed into a centre of sporting excellence, with the proposals including a football pitch and multi-lane running track.
Aberdeenshire Council’s scheme has been designed to allow people of all abilities to make the most of the facilities already there, including the caravan park and £9million community centre and swimming pool.
And the project has already been boosted by the backing of the town’s feuars managers, who own the land adjacent to the
town’s beach.
Ian Tait, who is a feuars manager, branded the project as “tremendous” last night.
“I totally support this,” he said.
“It’s going to be immensely beneficial for the town and will create a space where there can be competitions. It will also be good for the caravan site nearby.
“It will all fit in very well and be very good economically, and as a result be good for the town. It could help protect jobs in the long-run.”
Under the plans, a natural floodlit grass football pitch in the centre of the links will be created, along with a running track that will have an outside lane dedicated for all-ability users.
Mr Tait said this would allow people who borrow adapted bicycles from the nearby sports and community centre to use the track without issue.
He added: “Sometimes this project seemed as if it was dragging on, but we’ve got here in the end.”
Two adapted bikes are based at the community centre which can be withdrawn by people who are unable to ride unsupported.
Fraserburgh Development Trust is currently fundraising for a third.
Aberdeenshire Council was unable to comment on how much the project at the south links will cost to complete last night.
