Shetland’s bus timetables to be altered in May

Some of Shetland’s bus timetables are set to be altered to accommodate the new secondary school hours due to come into force in late May.

Members of the isles’ transport partnership ZetTrans will be asked on Friday to approve slight changes to timetables on routes affecting the south and west mainland, as well as Yell.

In February councillors voted to adopt a common timetable for all secondary departments in Shetland which will see longer days from Monday to Thursday, with Fridays ending earlier.

However, some public bus services linking in with schools at the end of the day will now have to be altered as a result.

The proposed changes in contract are expected to cost £37,000, with £13,000 due to be spent on printing, advertising and service registration fees.

Among the suggested changes is the west mainland 12 bus leaving the Anderson High School at 3.55pm instead of the current 3.35pm.

This would also have a knock-on effect on services linking in the likes of Aith, Walls and Skeld.

The mid-afternoon northbound number six during term time would leave Sandwick School at 3.45pm instead of 3.30pm, with the bus arriving at the Viking station in Lerwick at 4.24pm instead of 4.09pm.

The 24Y bus service from the Mid Yell School to Cullivoe would leave the school at 3.55pm on Monday-Thursday instead of 3.40pm, with the service departing at 2.15pm on Fridays.

The number 30 bus service from Mid Yell School to West Sandwick would also have its times changed.

More information on schools’ new opening and closing times can be found on the Shetland Islands Council website.
