A man who died in a rail accident at Fort William was hit by a train driven his ex-partner.
British Transport Police are investigating the death of Gary Wells near Ben Nevis Distillery.
However, it is understood the 36-year-old was previously in a relationship with the female train driver, who has not been named.
Locals paid tribute to the popular shinty player last night.
Fort William Shinty Club chairman, Duncan McPhee, said: “Gary was a well respected player, played goalkeeper for the first and second teams, and a great servant to Fort William Shinty Club.
“Our thoughts are very much with his family at this sad time – our hearts go out to them.”
Brian Murphy, one of the town’s councillors, said: “I know the family. This is a very sad tragedy. All the thoughts of the community go out to the family at this time.”
Emergency services were called to the railway near the Ben Nevis Distillery, just before 8am on Tuesday
The accident involved the 6.03am Mallaig to Glasgow Queen Street service and happened close to a private level crossing near the whisky plant, which is on the outskirts of Fort William.
Mr Wells, who is understood to have three children, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friends and family also paid online tributes to him last night, including his aunt Davina Langston, who lives in Lincoln.
She said: “RIP to my lovely nephew Gary, taken from us far too early.”
Sandra Gregor Syme said: “I’m so sorry about your loss please pass on to your family they are in my prayers,” while Robert Cairns added: “My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time Gary was a great bloke.”
James Buchanan said he was “thinking of you guys”, while Cari Lynne Chapman said: “I am so sorry – words can’t describe your pain, my prayers are with you all.”
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called to a rail crossing in Inverlochy, Fort William shortly before 8am on Tuesday, August 19, to a report that a man had been struck by a train.
“Colleagues from Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service also attended, but a 36-year-old man from the Fort William area was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is currently not being treated as suspicious.
“The man’s family have been informed. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
A ScotRail spokesman said: “We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by this sad incident.”
