Raft of speed limit consultations on north-east roads

Aberdeenshire Council is to embark on a raft of consultations on speed limits in villages throughout Buchan.

The local authority wants to hear the public’s view on proposed curbs at Maud, Hatton, Cruden Bay, Old Deer and Auchnagatt.

Its head of roads and landscape services, Philip McKay, said the council regularly assessed whether existing limits were appropriate.

He said: “Through a programme of town and village traffic reviews we regularly consider if existing traffic restrictions continue to be appropriate to manage the flow of traffic and maintain public safety.

“As well as considering issues such as traffic data, we also take account of comment and feedback we have received from elected members and the local communities.

“Once approved by the area committee, proposals are then exposed to a wider statutory and public consultation phase before a final decision is taken on implementation.”

Existing 30mph limits on the C103B at Maud, C72B at Hatton, B9030 at Auchnagatt and B9030 at Old Deer could all be extended.

The proposed extensions range in length from Old Deer’s 98ft, to Maud’s 590ft.

A 20mph speed limit is proposed at Cruden Bay.

In a statement of reasons attached to the report on the proposal, the local authority says it is “satisfied” it is necessary “in the interests of public safety” to introduce 20mph limits throughout the village.

The changes could mean stretches of Main Street, Harbour Street, Serald Street, School Lane, Hay Street, Ward Street, Green Street and Hill Street becoming mandatory 20mph zones.
