Willie Miller: Aberdeen not scoring the goals needed

Aberdeen's Gary Mackay-Steven.
Aberdeen's Gary Mackay-Steven.

The lack of goals scored by Aberdeen can affect how the defence plays and the team’s style of play.

This term it has been a struggle to find the back of net which puts more emphasis on the defence and keeping a clean sheet.

The defence has coped with that for most of the season.

What the lack of goals does is get into the players’ minds that they have got to keep a clean sheet because they are wondering who is going to get goals.

We’re approaching the halfway mark of the season and the top scorer is Gary Mackay-Steven, above, with six goals.

In recent years the Dons have had Adam Rooney, who was usually close to 10 goals by now and went on to hit the net 20 times in the campaign three seasons in a row.

At the moment there isn’t a regular goalscorer. Scott McKenna scored against Rangers, and Lewis Ferguson has popped up with important goals.

James Wilson has hit the target a couple of times and Bruce Anderson has netted two coming off the bench.

Mackay-Steven has looked the most likely to score this season and if the team isn’t scoring many goals it puts pressure on the defence. It also puts pressure on the whole team because you are left wondering who is going to score goals regularly.

Wilson and Stevie May haven’t stepped up – neither has Sam Cosgrove – and Derek McInnes will be working hard to find a solution.
