As summer winds down for another year, we look through the archives at some August highlights from as far back as 1960.

The tail end of the summer sees the conclusion of events such as concerts, markets and summer sports.

In this gallery, Union Street looks completely unrecognisable compared to the modern day from the cars on the road right down to the style of the shops.

August would bring around the Timmer Market in Aberdeen the origins of which date back to the 13th century as visitors took up any opportunity to grab a bargain.

We also see that in 1972, Aberdeen FC were in Scottish League Cup group stage action at a packed Pittodrie as they beat the eventual winners of the competition Hibs 4-1. The dons made their return to the league cup group stage last month.

How's that for one up manship... Mr Sandy Watt (59), Mastrick, Aberdeen just couldn't get ahead of his daughter, Sandra, Bridge of Don, when she tried out this stetson and cartridge bandoller made by the Morphie Leather Craft workship near St Cyrus at Aberdeen's Timmer Market yesterday. But Keith-born Sandy, who retires today from his job as a guard with British Rail, couldn't be persuaded to part with his bonnet...as he reckons, the stetson would be a bit conspicuous in the streets of Mastrick."
