Match preview: Aberdeen welcome Motherwell to Pittodrie after disappointing weekend

Aberdeen will welcome Motherwell to Pittodrie at full strength, as the Dons aim to pile the pressure on second-placed Rangers.

Derek McInnes will have a squad free from suspension or serious injury when the Steelmen make the trip north to the Granite City.

The Dons suffered a frustrating goalless draw at home to St Johnstone on Saturday and McInnes’ men will be looking to convert their considerable firepower this time around.

While both side have netted in the last five meeting between the sides, Aberdeen have been significantly more successful, winning five of the last seven encounters.

A win again tonight will see them cut the gap behind Rangers to just one point and defender Andy Considine has added fuel to the fire by claiming the Dons are better than the Light Blues – and urging his teammates to prove it.

“Beating Rangers to second spot is something the manager told us we need to achieve,” he told the Press and Journal.

“We need to do that and stamp our authority on Aberdeen being in second place.

“It would be a disappointment if we didn’t, the players would be upset if we lost second to Rangers.”

He added: “Because of dropping points last weekend – and Rangers winning – the Motherwell game is very important.”

Meanwhile, Motherwell will be without midfielder Ross MacLean who broke his toe in this weekend’s game with Kilmarnock.

Carl McHugh (concussion), Joe Chalmers (groin), Jacob Blythe and Kieran Kennedy (both knocks) also miss the Ladbrokes Premiership clash, while Chris Cadden, Steven Hammell and Jack McMillan face late fitness tests.

Assistant boss James McFadden will also not feature in the squad while manager Mark McGhee completes a two-match touchline ban.

Kick off is at 7.45pm.
