Jack Baldwin urges Ross County to be forceful in efforts to ignite campaign

Jack Baldwin insists Ross County must force the issue as they seek a breakthrough moment in their season.

The Staggies are bottom of the Premiership, albeit level on points with Dundee United.

Following last weekend’s 1-0 loss at Kilmarnock, Malky Mackay’s men are aiming to get back on track when they host Hearts on Sunday.

The slow start to this term follows a similar pattern to last term, when the Staggies waited until their 11th game to record their first win – in a stunning 5-0 triumph away to Dundee.

Although County have recorded two victories at this stage of the campaign, team captain Baldwin feels his side needs to start imposing themselves on matches.

Baldwin said: “As cliche as it is, football is a results business.

“I look at the Livingston game, where we were terrible to be completely honest. But we scored a goal, fought tooth and nail to keep hold of it and ground out a result.

“We went down to Killie on a similar surface, played some half decent stuff and created loads of chances, but we came away with nothing.

“It was the Dundee game last year that was the turning point for us.

“I don’t think we can sit and wait for something like that to happen though. We’ve got to be doing everything we can in every game to be on the front foot and impose ourselves on the game.

“A breakthrough moment might not be a 5-0 win. We might just get the rub of the green somewhere, we get a late goal or whatever it might be.

“When you are down on your luck, all you can do is keep working hard. That’s what we will continue to do and hopefully we can get a goal from a stroke of luck. It might be the turning point we need.”

Baldwin hoping to start racking up points before winter break

This weekend’s visit of the Jambos is the first of four games remaining for the Staggies before the World Cup shutdown.

Defender Baldwin is keen to go into the break on a high, but is keen to stress there are many points still to play for.

He added: “It’s four massive games, but hopefully we can get some results and points on the board, just to go into the break and press the reset button.

“The manager will give everyone the few days off they will need, and we will come in and work hard again.

“The winter period of any football season is massive, and it will be no different this year. There will be a lot of testing games, so it will be good if we can get some points on the board before then.

“It’s not the be all and end all, we’ve got a lot of football left to play. There’s no panic button just yet.”

‘To give them something back would be great’ – defender urges fans to stick with Staggies players

Baldwin has been a reliable performer for the Staggies since Mackay brought him in from Bristol Rovers last summer.

The Englishman has called for fans to keep faith in the side, which underwent big changes in the summer.

Baldwin added: “The message to the fans is to stick with us. We are an honest bunch of lads, who want to do well for the football club.

“For the fans that come and support us, we know geographically there is nobody else around.

“We appreciate them coming to all the games, and travelling all the way down to Kilmarnock on Saturday was huge for them.

“Just to give them something back would be great. There’s no point in us, as a group, feeling sorry for ourselves. All we can do is keep working hard, putting in the hard yards throughout the week.

“In football you make your own luck. Hopefully we will start making that soon, results will change and good times will come again.”
