Dons supporters group urges vigilance of scam social media page

Dons supporters have been urged to avoid a scam social media page requesting donations for fan displays.

The fans behind the Red Army Display – Aberdeen FC Facebook page have hit out after an apparent clone account was set up to try and dupe people out of money.

When the administrators of the original page contacted the clone, which shares the name and profile picture, they were asked to donate to future displays.

Last night one of the group urged people to be vigilant, and stressed they are not currently fundraising.

The group was heavily involved in the tributes paid to the late Neale Cooper on Friday, releasing dozens of balloons into the air.

Last night Matt Coull of the group said the copying was “sick” especially given the recent death of the Gothenburg Great.

He added that they had contacted the police who advised they share the information.

He said: “We put a picture out on Friday night of the balloons being released and then another page took it, clearly trying to pass themselves off as us.

“We don’t want anyone to get stung so would urge people to be aware of it.

“We have changed our approach to fundraising, we don’t just take money now but look to raise it through auctions and events.”
