Fraserburgh sheltered housing complex praised for making people ‘feel useful again’

A north-east sheltered housing complex has been praised by inspectors for making people “feel useful again”.

The Aberdeenshire Council-run facility in Jarvis Court in Fraserburgh was rated as “very good” by the Care Inspectorate after a visit last month.

The purpose-built complex in Catherine Watt Drive had 21 tenants in its 21 flats, receiving care and support when inspectors turned up unannounced.

In their report, inspectors concluded tenants enjoyed a “very good quality” experience and were supported to have a “very good quality of life”.

Residents, too, gave glowing reports of their experience in the home, which opened in 2013, when they were asked by the visitors.

Tenants told inspectors “the days are not long” at Jarvis Court as they felt occupied and “useful again”.

One said: “I have settled in with nae bother. I can come and go as I please.

“Lots of good company and got to know people- they are like my new family.”

Another said they were “very settled”.

Staff at the complex were praised for recognising the importance of gardening to the residents, who have been working to improve it.

Many had spoken fondly of local nursery children coming to help them plant daffodil bulbs and had made plans for a daffodil tea in the spring.

The inspectors concluded they were “confident” staff would continue to support all tenants and those attending day care at Jarvis Court with care which was “right for them”.
