RGU Graduations: Aberdeen woman proves it’s never too late to change your career

An Aberdeen woman proved it’s never too late to change your mind after switching courses in her final year.

Hannah Rhind, from Bridge of Don, picked up a first class honours degree in management with human resources management from the Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen yesterday.

Speaking after collecting her degree at Her Majesty’s Theatre, the 22-year-old said she felt a huge sense of relief.

“I always doubted myself, but now I’ve actually done it,” she said.

“It’s been a lot of stress, especially in the final year, you think you’re never actually going to get to this point, so it’s quite surreal.”

The former Oldmachar Academy pupil studied management with marketing for three years, but a placement with accountancy firm Johnston Carmichael’s HR department made her re-evaluate her career choice.

In fourth year, she switched her degree and, despite the last-minute change, managed to achieve consistently high grades.

She added: “I was offered a part-time job with JC (Johnston Carmichael) while on placement and really helped me in my last year.

“It meant I could apply practical knowledge when completing my dissertation, which was based on my work there.”

Miss Rhind, who now has a permanent job with the accountants, said her fellow students helped make the transition an easier one.

“Going from one course to another meant I was leaving a group of friends behind and I didn’t know anyone, but everyone was so nice – we were all in the same boat and you don’t really want it to end.”
