Two leading north-east women have been appointed to the board of Aberdeen Performing Arts.

Former MP, Dame Anne Begg, will join businesswoman, Carol Benzie, on the board of the charitable trust.

They will now become ambassadors for the organisation which runs His Majesty’s Theatre, The Lemon Tree and the Music Hall.

The duo will take the place of Georgina Howden and Jenn Adams who stepped down at the end of last year.

APA chairman Craig Pike was delighted to welcome them on board.

He said: “We are absolutely thrilled to bring Dame Anne Begg and Carol Benzie on board with APA.

“Both women are highly influential and respected figures in the north-east and will be a very welcome addition to the table.

“Dame Anne is a prolific campaigner and sound voice of reason, while Carol Benzie brings the tremendous business expertise that comes from her years of senior management at Aberdeen International Airport.

“Both will become ambassadors for the organisation and will help set the strategic direction of APA.”

Mrs Benzie is confident her business experience will prove useful to the organisation.

She added: “I’m delighted to have joined the APA board at such an exciting time.

“I have a long-standing interest in performance and arts, but hope that my background in business will be of value to the excellent team operating our fantastic venues.”

Dame Anne said, as a “theatre buff”, it was great to be involved.

She said: “I am so pleased to have been appointed to the Board of APA. I have always been a theatre buff, so it is a privilege to be part of the organisation which brings first-class theatre, music and entertainment to Aberdeen.”
