Charities in Aberdeen and Inverness will receive donations of surplus stock from ScotRail’s hospitality supply.
As the rail operator has temporarily shut down its on-board hospitality services, it has mounds of short-dated items including snack boxes, confectionery and soft drinks which could potentially go to waste.
Management decided to put the food and drink to good use, by gifting them to benevolent groups at a time when help is sorely needed.
ScotRail’s hospitality team leader, Selina Russell, coordinated the efforts for Inverness Foodstuff at Ness Bank Church, while colleague Stewart Ross sorted out donations for Cfine in Aberdeen.
Fiona Smith, from Inverness Foodstuff, said: “We were delighted to receive the donation as we rely on the generosity of others to allow us to feed the vulnerable and homeless seven days a week.
“We delivered 106 meals yesterday and have seen an increased demand since lockdown.
“We have a fantastic team and I’m very proud of their dedication.
“I’m delighted that ScotRail supported us, especially with the Twix bars. They’re a classic and people should still be able to have a treat – especially at Easter.”
Steven Milne, the rail organisation’s catering operations manager, added: “As our country faces uncertain times, it’s important for us to pull together and help any way that we can.
“By donating our short-dated food and drink stock to foodbanks across the country, we hope that it will go to good use and benefit those in need during these really challenging times.”
