Aberdeenshire Council’s bridges team have been out since the early hours this morning carrying out inspections following a day of flooding chaos.
Heavy rain hit the region on Saturday morning and led to a number of roads and bridges being closed due to surface water and flooding. There were also reports of smaller bridges on unclassified roads collapsing.
The local authority said today “most main roads are now open however a number of smaller roads are still closed due to bridges being washed away. These roads are likely to be closed for some time so please do not ignore road closure signs”.
Members of its bridges team have been out since the early hours inspecting bridges for signs of damage. Concrete boulders have been placed across some closed roads and motorists have been urged to not ignore road closure signs.
“They are there for good reason”, a post from the council’s twitter page said.
Here is the latest list of road closures:
- B9123 Dubford – Gardenstown Road – Traffic Lights due to road being partially washed away
- UC17s Lower Cotburn – Litterty CLOSED – Bridge out
- King Edward – A947 -UC road – Gorrachie CLOSED – Bridge out
It was a multi-agency response to the weather conditions yesterday with police, fire crews and coastguard also involved.
Coastguard teams from Banff and Portsoy were called to assisted the fire service with an incident at Crovie.
“Fortunately no one was found to be at risk, despite a huge volume of water flowing through a normally small stream,” a spokesman for the HM Coastguard – Moray said.
“The teams were then tasked to assist at various incidents between Crudie, King Edward and Banff, including bridge collapses, persons trapped in vehicles and stopping persons entering flood water.
“Never drive through floodwater or attempt to wade through. Various hazards (lifted drains/subsidence etc) may be hidden and even a small amount of flowing water can wash you off your feet. If you see anyone in difficulties, don’t hesitate to call 999.”
