VIDEO: Three children injured in A9 crash

A child was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after two cars collided on the A9 at the weekend.

Police were last night unable to give an update on the condition of the child, who was flown to Raigmore Hospital.

Police, fire and ambulance  were called to the scene near Ralia at around 3.45pm on Saturday.

One of the vehicles, which appeared to be a silver coloured people carrier, was badly burned. The other, a grey Land Rover Discovery, was also damaged.

A police spokesman said: “Three young children were in one of the vehicles – one is being taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries, another by ambulance while another is being assessed at the scene.”

A stretch of the A9 south of Newtonmore was closed for some time, with local diversions in place.

Police thanked motorists for their patience but last night were unable to give any update on the condition of the children.

Yesterday afternoon a coach full of pensioners crashed into a ditch on a remote Highland route after reportedly swerving to avoid a motorcyclist.

The passengers and driver were not physically injured but a number of people aboard were visibly shaken by the incident which happened on a single-track road shortly after 1pm, between Oykel Bridge and Loubcroy on the A837 Inveran-Ledmore route in Sutherland.

Local historian Scilla Aitchison, who was passing en route to Ullapool, stopped to check everyone was OK.

She said: “I stopped to talk to the driver to see if there was anything we could do. They had got them all out. Nobody was hurt but they were all a bit shocked.

“The driver had managed to get a signal and call the police.

“I asked him what happened and he said an oncoming motorcycle had come round the bend, didn’t move and put the coach off the road into the ditch.

“The coach ended up close to being on its side.”

It is understood the coach had been heading for Ullapool.
