CLAN Cancer Support were awarded £25,000 in recognition of their work in the north-east.

Cancer charities in the north and north-east will benefit from a share of £50,000 after shoppers offered them support through a supermarket campaign.

Tesco customers cast their votes this summer to choose a number of projects they felt were worthy recipients of grants being issued to celebrate the company’s centenary.

Clan Cancer Support, which has bases across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray along with centres in Orkney and Shetland, has now been awarded £25,000.

Maggie’s Highlands came in second place, receiving a boost of £15,000.

Duncan Peter, trusts and giving manager at Clan Cancer Support, said: “The grant will help significantly with the delivery of complementary therapies throughout the areas we operate in, and benefit many individuals going through their own cancer journey.”

The head of the Maggie’s Highlands centre, Seonaid Green, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who took their time to vote.

“We rely almost entirely on voluntary donations to be able to support people to live well with cancer.”

Maggies Highlands is based in the grounds of Raigmore Hospital and offers “emotional and social support” from 9am to 5pm every day of the week.

The Tesco project – which is run in partnership with Groundwork – provides funding to thousands of local community projects each year, which are recognised for striving to make a difference in their local area.

The national Cardiac Risk in the Young charity scooped £10,000.
