Three dolphins have died after becoming stranded in Portree Bay.

Rescue teams were called to the Skye town shortly after 4pm on Sunday to rescue a large pod of dolphins.

A total of 12 common dolphins were caught up in the stranding.

Conservationists for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) race to the scene to begin rescue efforts.

Members Portree and Dunvegan coastguard were also on hand to assist alongside Portree lifeboat.

Nine dolphins were successfully returned to open water.

However, despite their best efforts, a number of the pod failed to make it out of the harbour.

One male and female dolphin died alongside a calf.

Officials from BDMLR, Portee coastguard, Dunvegan coastguard and Portree lifeboat were called to the Skye town shortly before 4pm.

The Scottish Marine Animals Stranding Scheme (SMASS) arrived on Skye on Monday morning to collect the carcasses for testing.

It marks the first mass stranding event to happen on Skye since 2015.

A total of 21 long-finned pilot whales beached themselves in Staffin due to a pod member suffered with birth complications.

After an almost 24-hr operation, BDMLR managed to successfully refloat 18 of the animals back out to sea.

In an earlier version of this article we reported four dolphins had died after a pod of 16 had been stranded, based on information provided by the coastguards.
